Mother Glaze Tea Set | A token of sharing, a vessel of embracement

The “Communal Chawan Service” originated from a tea farmer tradition where they would invite friends after tea production for a tasting of the tea. Sincerity and friendship is on display in this simple gesture as the friends savor the spiritual essence of tea. This large, wood-fired chawan reintroduces the spirit of sharing by passing along tea and kindness alike.

The piece is wood-fired at the ultra-high temperature of 1452℃. Fire and earth converge, giving rise to the vibrant flow and tender texture of natural glaze. Following the Taiwan Chawan Tea Ceremony Rituals, I brew the tea in the large communal chawan, then serve it in small portions to the guests. The ritual expands the tasting process beyond the sense of taste to become a dialogue of the heart and soul - from appreciating the appearance, smelling the fragrance, sipping the tea, to a circulation of well intentions.

The communal tea service is not only a way to drink tea, it guides to a path that revisits what it means to share and for people to establish connections between one another. Let the tea be the start of dialogue; Let the vessel be one that embraces emotions.
